CDL Physical Exams

Additional Information

The Department of Transportation requires all Commercial Drivers License (CDL) holders to receive periodic physical examinations to ensure the ability of the driver to safely operate a commercial vehicle. As a result, there are a large number of individuals who will require CDL physical examinations. Some examples include:

  • All CDL Holders
  • Federal Motor Carrier Administration (FMCSA)
  • Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
  • Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA)
  • Maritime Administration 
  • Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Federal Transit Administration (FTA)

A Brief Overview of the Physical

Discussion regarding intake information, health history, surgeries, medications, physicians, etc.
Height and Weight
Blood Pressure
Pulse
Forced Whisper Test
Snellen Eye Chart
Color blind test (red, green, amber)
Visual and manual inspection of skin, eyes, ears, nose, throat
Auditory and palpatory inspection of lung, heart, and abdomen
Manual muscle and sensory testing
Reflexes
Urine dipstick test to measure sugar, protein, blood and specific gravity

What to Bring to Your CDL Physical Examinations?

  • Current Driver’s License
  • List of all medications that you take
  • Address and phone numbers of physicians
  • Timeline/dates of surgeries you have had
  • Eye glasses or contact lenses – if you use them
  • Hearing aids – if you use them
  • Your old or current medical certificate
  • If you have any of the following conditions you may need a clearance letter from your treating physician:  Heart disease, diabetes, respiratory issues, seizure, stroke, certain surgeries, psychiatric issues, previous  positive drug/alcohol screening, taking certain medications.  Please call the office at 757-500-3560 if you need more information.

A1C Finger Prick Test

$50*

Any driver diagnosed with or taking medication for Diabetes will be required to have an A1C within 6 months of exam.
